Where do our calories GO? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Weight Loss/Gain is dictated by calories in vs calories out.⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Understanding where the 'calories in' come from is pretty easy.⁣⁣The 'calories out' part of the equation is more complex, as there are 4 different ways in which the body uses calories.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) - keeping you alive!⁣⁣By FAR the largest chunk of your 'calories out'. Keeping your brain and organs running requires a lot of energy. You will burn these calories even if you lie in bed all day.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) - the calories your burn digesting food. This normally accounts for about 10% of total calories burned.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. Non-Exercise-Activity-Thermogenesis (NEAT) - All the calories brushing your teeth, walking, having sex. All non-exercise activity.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. Exercise. You probably expected this one to occupy a bigger chunk of the chart didn't you?⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The reality is exercise doesn't burn as many calories as people think.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Why?⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Because you can't do it for that long. Sure if you're able to exercise for 6-8 hours a day it'll make up a much bigger chunk, but unless you're a professional athlete that's proably not realisitic.⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Exercise is GREAT for your health but an overrated weight loss tool.
